Creating a great space for a child can be both a challenge and one of the most excitingly creative do-it-yourself projects you’ll ever undertake. The profuse use of color, lighting, storage and features can make them feel creative and empowered and immerse them in a world that is all their own.
How a child’s room is decorated or the color scheme can play a key role in how it inspires their imaginations, creativity and intelligence. Think about what your child’s interests are and what kinds of colors they gravitate toward. Whether your child is a budding artist or fashion designer who adores dolls or gets dreamy-eyed at the idea of adventures on board a pirate ship or in outer space, creating a space that piques their interest and gives a feeling of relaxation and safety is important.
Color can also play a key role in behavior. It is a fine line to walk, so be sure that the colors and decorating schemes you choose are right. What is right for your taste as an adult may not be right for your child. Some bright colors can cause children to be keyed-up, while other shades can give a sense of relaxation and focus.
1. If the room you are decorating is for an infant or baby under the age of two or three, it is best to go with very soft, pastel colors in babies’ rooms so that too much stimulus is avoided and is conducive to sleep. Too much visual stimulus can make it hard for them to relax and you could end up with a cranky baby. Keep the light and tones comfortably lit in the first few months of life and make use of soft, indirect LED lights that can serve as a comfort in the night should they wake up. 2. Play to the fantasy. Every child loves the world of make believe and imagination. Creating a bed to look like a boat or a tree house on a faraway desert island, a star fighter or like Cinderella’s coach can produce spectacular results.
3. Kids love hideaways and secret spaces of their own. Having a bunk bed that doubles as a fort or reading nook on those rainy days or cold nights and gives them a sense of being in a club house that is all their own to build memories in. Loft spaces can provide a place to get away from it all and separate sleeping and reading areas away from the rest of the room.
4. Every kid likes to collect something. Whether it’s rocks, model cars, or comic books, making use of display and organization drawers, cubbyholes or shelves that are color coded and labelled can really add areas of interest to a room’s decor and help them to be more organized. Why not try a bit of chalkboard paint on walls or furniture so that they can follow their creative aspirations? Chalkboard paint comes in various colors and can be drawn on and erased over and over with inexpensive and colorful chalks available at many retail stores.
5. Kids need things to be at their level. You can help a child stay more organized when furniture, closets, chairs, and the like are sized with them in mind. There are also furniture choices on the market that can be resized or repurposed and evolved into another type of furniture as a child grows older by adding other simple elements.
6. Light in kids’ rooms is especially important. Take advantage of natural light and try to include various kinds of lighting to inspire various activities. A reading light by the bed is helpful for nighttime reading, for example. One creative parent carefully wove LED rope lighting into a large braided rug so that it served as a night light to help their child find their way to the bathroom in the middle of the night without needing to fumble for a light. Having a battery powered emergency lamp in a child’s room or near an exit is a great idea and can light the way toward a safe exit n case of a fire.
7. Having decorating elements that are more kid-proof is ideal. Scuffs, scrapes and dents caused by roughhousing and play will just fit right in to the overall ambiance in a kids bed or play room. Furniture such as beanbag chairs, overstuffed cushions in bright colors can make.
